Wedding Dessert Table Inspiration

by Nina on June 25, 2010

Darcy Miller’s casual feel to her formal wedding is what makes it easy for me to use pieces of her wedding as inspiration for our wedding.

Oh many years ago when Darcy’s wedding was first published in Martha Stewart Weddings, I quickly ripped the pages out and saved them in a very safe place. I knew I would need the images one day!

I’ve been to many weddings where there are pieces of cake left all over the tables at the end of the night. After numerous discussions, we’ve decided to have a Dessert Table instead of only a cake or signature dessert served to each guest. A small(ish) cake in the center surrounded by lots of small desserts and treats using Darcy’s table as our inspiration.

I’m meeting with the baker to finalize all of the plans on Tuesday. I’m so excited! I know I’ve talked about desserts before but how did you serve dessert at your wedding or what has been your favorite dessert at a wedding? And who’s with me on my love for Darcy Miller… or at least jealous of her job!?

Yes, love Darcy and soooo jealous of her job! Did you see the feature last year in Martha Stewart Living featuring her illustrations and the wonderful shadowboxes and such she’s made for her kids? She is soooo talented!

Also love Darcy! We just had our wedding three weeks ago and opted to have a pie/baklava bar (we’re not big cake fans). That way guest could choose one or both! Everyone loved it and it was demolished by the end of the night (even with planning for lots of extras!)

We had a huge cookie display… all kinds of cookies (including 800 mini-butter-press cookies my grandmother made with love!) displayed on different levels of vintage cake stands. We served brandied milk punch with them. They were such a hit that our photographer didn’t even get a chance to grab a good shot of the entire display – as soon as they were out, the guests DESCENDED on them like vultures! It was crazy!

We had cake too – ’twas delicious but just served the standard way!

Who doesn’t love Darcy Miller?! Seriously, she is so fabulous, both because of who she is and (of course!) because of her job. I would like to be her when I grow up :)

We had a fake cake at our wedding. Three tiers and only the middle was real. We cut the cake and fed each other and then wait staff promply served pre sliced cake! Much cheaper and no waiting in line. While we didn’t have the top tier to eat on our anniversary, we did save the rest of the real layer to eat instead. I’m not big on superstitions so it didn’t matter to me. In fact I’m pretty sure we forgot about the cake till several months after our anniversary haha.

Yay for wedding talk… moremoremore! I miss it but can’t bring myself to revisit wedding blog world – so personal blogs featuring a bride it is!

We had individual strawberry shortcakes made and served after dinner. T and I aren’t into wedding cake and didn’t want to do a cake-cutting, but we both love strawberry shortcake. So Southern-shortbread-style it was, topped with fresh cream and local strawberries and blueberries to go with the colors of everything. YUM!

We had cake. We also had a candy buffet of german chocolates and candies, thanks to my generous Aunt! Candy buffet was demolished quickly.
