Traveling with Baby

by Nina on September 12, 2011

Traveling with a baby is definitely a new experience. Fortunately, Jack was born in July so we were not on house arrest. After we’d been at home for two solid weeks we were all ready to get out of the house so we drove to St. Louis for the weekend when Jack was two weeks old. I’m confident our choice to pick up and go right off the bat has helped us remain calm when it comes to leaving the house for more than the day. We function under the rule, “if we forget something, we can get it along the way.” This eliminates a lot of running around like a mad woman for me making sure I’ve packed everything from formula to the vacuum. And Jack is cool as a cucumber in his car seat and in the car which also makes it almost stress free.

A few things we do not leave the house without:

Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 car seat from Just Kids Store – Highly recommend this car seat and Just Kids Store. Just Kids Store has great deals and are the nicest people! Be sure to check out their site and tell them I sent you. ;)

White noise machine

Summer Infant SwaddleMe

First Years Babypro Sterilizer

Bugaboo Cameleon Stroller – JH bought me a BOB over the weekend so depending on where we are going the BOB might go instead of the Cameleon.

Burp clothes – we received many as gifts but my mom and I also embellished some with fun fabrics.

Clothes – we have footed pajamas for night time and one piece outfits for day time. It’s starting to cool down here so socks are a necessity now for day time.

Bottles – we use Dr. Brown’s and love them. I have both plastic and glass. The plastic make for lighter baggage during travel but I actually really like using the glass.

Somehow the three of us fill our small/mid-size SUV to where we can’t fit another object let alone another human in there. Every time JH packs the car for a trip he walks in the house and says, “we need a Suburban!”

Here we are at the Cards game on Friday night in St.Louis. Jack’s wearing a Lulu McGee seersucker longall with a matching Cardinals bib he received from Angie of Lois Jean’s Linens. Many thanks to both of these sweet gals!

Tell me… are you a family on the go? What are the top items you do not leave the house without? Any tips or tricks for traveling as Jack gets older?

Hi Nina… Love your blog. Long time lurker first time poster & I love all your thoughts and ideas. Your son is extremely handsome!!! You guys have a beautiful family. Your DH thinks you need a Suburban, sometimes I wonder if that is enough lol… I have twin boys 9 mths old & a Tahoe & it’s not enough room sometimes. Def thinking about the Suburban with 3rd row or the minivan… Any suggestions on a young mom trying to stay cool but not soccer-momish??? Also would love to hear your thoughts on your new BOB… I need a double though…

When my son was little I kept the small sleep sheep attached to his car seat for while noise on the go and in the car, but now that he is in a convertable car seat I keep a noise machine in the car with batteries. It is louder and so awesome now that he is older. I also use this when the power goes out and we need one with batteries.

I had the Medela Freestyle breast pump and it make pumping in the car SO much easier. You can charge it before you leave the house and then don’t have to plug it in the pump. I would carry a small cooler for the milk.

Type out a travel list and keep it on your computer. That way it is always there for your next trip and you don’t have to write everything out again.

Hope this helps!

What a great idea! When H was little I took the bugaboo everywhere, when he got older we bought a mclaren umbrella stroller. I never left the house without my lands end canvas diaper bag either! Now that he is 2 1/2 I carry a JPJ purse that is big enough to carry everything I need for myself and H. I always have at least 2 pairs of underwear and shorts with me in case he has any accidents, books, crayons, and cars.
