Mini-vacation is officially o.v.e.r. JH’s mom and I drove home together today. We had a lot of fun, to say the least! I just love her. We stopped to have lunch with her mom, JH’s Nana, about two hours or so into our trip. We went up to this cute Italian place, I had a very tasty dish of manicotti with a side salad. A little off subject but equally as important…. We stopped on Friday to have lunch with Nana too & while we were there she gave me the most gorgeous bright blue scarf. With initiation by Kiks, everyone decided that the new scarf looked MUCH better than the brown one I had been wearing up until that point. Thank goodness for Nana’s great taste or I would have looked like a mess the rest of the day, unbeknownst to me!
So back on task, we arrived in Nana’s town about an hour early today. She was still in Mass, therefore a TJ Maxx stop was in order for us.

JH & I want to learn how to make homemade (not to be mistaken with “wholemade”
) French Onion soup so when I saw these little crocks, I immediately added them to my cart. Do you make French Onion soup? Do you have any tricks for us!?

Bash n’ Chop is an incredible kitchen tool. I own one already. I think my parents own at least 2, if not 3. This one was marked $3.99 so you guessed it… added to cart.

I bought this very popular cookbook “simple secrets to get your kids eating good food” for a gift, but after looking at the recipes I think I may just keep it for myself. I think JH will be a HUGE fan!!

Last but not least, I have wanted one of these mixing bowls since last year. I’m sure the lady in the aisle thought I was a bit crazy when I let out a quiet squeal when my eyes spotted the BIG bowl above! The bowls are by Zak! home and are made with all recycled materials. I like my mixing bowls just like I like my latte mugs…. XXL!! Happy Sunday to all and to all a great week ahead.

I’ve been wanting to make homemade french onion soup too, and have been wanting those bowls and that kitchen tool! Can’t wait to hear any tips you get. Sounded like a great weekend!

I have attempted FOS many times and my favorite recipe, by far, is PW’s recipe found here: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2009/02/french-onion-soup/
My best tip would be to watch the onions carefully so they do not get crispy! I am too impatient and turn the heat up to much causing the onions to *ahem* get a little on the crispy side! The point is to soften them and let them carmelize! Yum!!!
Additionally, use wine that you would enjoy a glass of… Certainly not cooking wine. And, splurge for the gruyere cheese! YUM!!!!!!!!!
Good luck!
What great finds – love TJ Maxx! I spotted that cookbook there a few weeks back and hummed and hawed over it, but didn’t end up getting it. But it would have been a great idea to pick it up for a gift! Oh well, its probably gone now. Enjoy making french onion soup!

I need to hit up TJ and Homegoods for some serious Christmas shopping. Dave and I aren’t doing any big exchanges this year (because of Costa Rica) but I still have tons of family to shop for. It’s going to be a recessionista Christmas for this lady! Love your purchases.
