I’ve decided to bring back Target Tuesday... for at least a little while. Target was one of the places we registered at for our wedding and since we are in the process of decorating our new home, I’m confident I can keep Target Tuesday filled up with vacuums, rugs, mugs, wall decor and much much more!
Today, I need your help. I purchased this accent rug from the Fieldcrest® Luxury Jacobean Floral Wool Rug Collection last week. I bought it specifically for our backdoor which is actually visible from pretty much anywhere in the main living areas of our home. We have a very open living space. Kitchen, dining room and living room are all open to each other. Plus we walk right over it every time we go in and out of the master bedroom. I do LOVE the design of this rug and it’s very well made.
The question: We have a long hallway on the other side of the living space (opposite the backdoor) that needs a runner in the worst way. Do I buy the matching runner or a different one?? Does it matter than I’ve decorated the guest room with this patterned duvet?? I also need a rug under under dining room table and also in our kitchen. Rugs make me very nervous. I don’t want the rug to limit my decor but I also don’t want the rugs to be completely lame-o-beige.
Would love to hear your thoughts on my rug predicament?

I would get something in jute/weave – like a natural color but with texture. That would tie the colors together and add interest with texture but not be so blah as to be just plain beige. Instead of mixing it up with patterns and colors, mix it up with texture…you can even get one with a colored border. I just bought 2 jute rugs at Lowe’s for $58 each and love, love, love them – not sure if they have runners though. I love patterned rugs but in a hallway it might be claustrophobic…plus jute/rattan rugs can be easily repurposed.

I have rug predicaments in my home too…it’s all very open: kitchen, living, dining. I love the lay out, but rugs have helped me to separate the spaces. Currently I have the Pottery Barn Jute Rug in my kitchen and a fun bluish, orangish one in my dining room that I found at Marshalls. My living room is carpet so I’m saved there.
I think you can go with patterns as long as it’s the same color scheme….I’m getting ready to replace my kitchen one soon and my interior decorator friend is going to help me pick a new one if you want to hear what she says! (sorry for such the long post!!!)
BTW: Check Ballard Designs. They have great rugs at really good prices! Good luck!

Well, I’m certainly no expert, but I think all the rugs should be different, but coordinate. For some reason, it kind of bugs me when people have the same style of rug in different sizes. (However, in your space, it may look nice. ???) Maybe you could use the rug you showed in one place, and then a jute rug in another place and maybe an oriental rug in a coordinating color somewhere else. Or instead of an oriental rug, you could go with something in a scroll pattern with only two colors. To me, as long as all the rugs have similar colors and coordinate with one another, you’re good. I think the duvet is beautiful and doesn’t really have to match the rugs in other rooms.
I say no to the same rug… stick in the same color ways, but do a stripe in one area, a natural in another, and maybe a smaller pattern in the other. You can use similar colors and have them all play off each other, but I wouldn’t do matching rugs. It can look forced.

I guess I am odd man out here, and although I like all of the above suggestions, I would go with the same runner. Much as I try not to go all matchey matchey, I do like that look. I also think that design of the rug works well with the duvet. Nice patterns.
Best,
Colleen

Rugs are difficult to master. Once I find a plan that works it is hard to change. Maybe that is why I still have the braided rugs in my kitchen, hall and rear entry ways. I went with all the same pattern because my wall paper is so busy but since you have solid walls you may want to pick things up a little with the rugs. The other thing I think you should consider before you make a final decision on the rugs is what you plan to do with window treatments. And, it’s a bit like the domino effect in that it will be hard to know what will work until you land on a sofa. I think your window treatments can really add some dynamic to the whole look. I am thinking a bold stripe to tie in with your rug design. I love the colors. Maybe we can look sometime if our schedules ever jive. I would love to help.
We have that exact same rug in our living room!
