Safe Haven was my first Nicholas Sparks book to read. After watching the The Notebook, every time one of this books popped up in the suggestions section on Amazon I always found myself ignoring them.
But during one of my weekly strolls through Target I saw Safe Haven on the New Release rack. Low and behold, St. Nicholas (ironic?) delivered it to me in my stocking on December 6th. I did not start flipping the pages until I got to the beach after Christmas due to a crazy busy December schedule.
Honestly the book was slow in the beginning. It took me days to get past page 50 but once I got that far I couldn’t put it down.
There were numerous times I almost jumped out of my skin while reading the parts of the book narrated by Kevin. I won’t go into great detail of this character but if you’ve read the book or are going to read it you’ll understand. He made references to the Bible to justify his horrid actions which made me sick to my stomach. I found myself reading those parts very quickly.
Nicholas Sparks’ writing is so real that I actually felt more like I was watching a movie rather than reading a book. What a beautiful talent.
I highly recommend this book to you. It was an quick read of a very intense, scary story mixed with a story of courage, love and finding new life.
After reading this story by Nicholas Sparks, I now plan to read The Lucky One (before the movie comes out!). Thanks, Erin for the recommendation!

Thanks for the review, I have this on my list to read this year. Glad to hear that you liked it.
You need to read Threw Weeks With my Brother. It is a true story written by Nicholas Sparks about his life. After reading this I understood more of his writing and how he understands souls. All of his books have some kind of twist.
I think Nicholas Sparks is kind of a subpar writer (in terms of craft) but an amazing storyteller. I also like the subtle Southern themes found in his novels. I would recommend Dear John (the movie is cute) and I actually enjoyed The Last Song as well (but the movie was atrocious). Happy new year, Nina!
I started reading this book 2 days before my book club. (I had it laying on my coffee table for over a month prior but just could not muster up the desire to start it.) Once I did, I could not put it down and found myself staying up late into the night to finish it. Love books like that!
Just added this to my list of books to read this year! Actually, I stole a few off of Erin’s book list to read this year and this was one of them. What else do you have on your reading list?
I’ve actually been following your blog for awhile, but I’m finally deciding to comment!! (I get pretty excited about books….what can I say?!) I must admit, I’m not a huge fan of N Sparks although i do find his books quick and engaging and I do agree some of them start a little slow. But by far, The Lucky One was my favorite of those I have read. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed! I can’t wait to hear what you think!
I have to say, I have never seen or read the Notebook. I honestly read Dear John because I saw the trailer in the movies! And Nicholas Sparks can truly make you feel like you are “in” a story. I do not know if you saw the movie, but if you did not…read Dear John
Safe Haven will now be on my list of next reads. Thanks for the review!
I haven’t read this one yet but I’m looking forward to it! I love Nicholas Sparks! I grew up in eastern NC so I’m familiar with so many of the small towns and details that he describes in his books and it just warms my heart now that I live in Florida. I also just finished The Help yesterday and it was fantastic! I devoured that book in a week! I really need to find some girls around here and start a book club. I love to read!
I’ve only read one other Nicholas Sparks book, but I really enjoyed it! I’ll have to add this one to my list!
I just finished that book myself! I have to say, Nicholas Sparks is hit and miss for me. Some of his books (like, for example, The Wedding, where the swan was supposed to be the dead character from The Notebook – no thanks). But this one was an alright one for me. I just have a hard time when he incorporates the whole supernatural thing into his books. The whole plot line with Jo nearly lost this one for me. Definitely one of his better ones overall though!
