What Will We Call Our Sweet Boy?

by Nina on March 22, 2011

Our baby boy has had a name since before we knew he was a boy. JH and I have always shared the desire to give our children traditional family names. It’s something that is really important to us. We are definitely at an advantage since we both come from very large families full of great names, it wasn’t too hard to land on one (… or four) that we both loved. There really never was any sort of deliberation!

Our sweet boy will carry the name…

jack

John : Both of our Godfather’s share the name John.

Joseph : Is for my husband plus four generations going back to his great grandfather (and maybe more. One of JH’s great uncles is still researching). Joseph covers almost every male in his family.

Gregory : Is for my dad.

And we’ll call him, “Jack” after my Godfather, who has gone by Jack most of his life.

All of these men have and do play such a massive role in our lives and will in Jack’s life too. We feel unbelievably privileged for our little guy to share a name with these remarkable people that we love so so dearly.

We talk to Jack all the time and call him by name. I sometimes even go over the spelling with him. “J, A, C, K!”

JH ends every conversation with, “Don’t drink, don’t do drugs and don’t spend money. Daddy loves you very much!” It’s makes me smile. He’s already such a great dad.

Via Baby Center, we have approximately 124 days until we meet our Jack! We could not be more excited!

I love it! Our first boy (when we get to that point) will be name Michael. My fiance, his dad, and my brother all share the name. If we have a second boy we have talked about Jack bc both of our grandfather’s are Jack and my oldest brother is Jay bc that’s my grandfather’s initials (Jack Addison Yates). For me, names need to have meaning.

I love that name! I also love the idea of family names. My husband is a 3rd and we know that we will keep the tradition in some way if we every have a boy.

Thanks for sharing!

How perfect! That’s one of the best baby names I’ve heard in a long time. My husband and I are both very fond of traditional names. My grandfather was Jack, and I think it has such a classic resonance.

Our son’s middle name is a family name and our future kids (2 of course, one a girl and one a boy, b/c that’s how it works, right?) both are completely family names. John is a lovely, lovely name. We would use that and call him Jack, but we know wayyyy too many Jack’s in our immediate group of friends, so we have another nn for our *future* 2nd boy. Enjoy the next 100 days. They’re amazing ones. They’ll be even more amazing when little Jack Jack arrives!!

What a beautiful name you have chosen for your son. The way you came up with this name is awesome. There is so much love in your family. As for tradition, it is even more awesome. It is a tradition in the Jewish religion to name our children after someone in our family we dearly love or loved. Then we have a baby naming, whereas the rabbi circumcises the baby if a boy, and says prayers and blessings over the child and It is truly a joyous celebration. It is truly joyous that you are having a baby and I am so incredibly happy for you. SRB
