miners play in windy city…

by Nina on September 8, 2008

My weekend was fantastic. I met Mike & Linda Scanzano (from south Jersey) at the Standard Bank Stadium on Friday night…To watch the first game of the playoffs between the Southern Illinois Miners and the Windy City Thunderbolts. It didn’t end in our fav, we lost in extra innings. But, no need to worry it’s best of 5!
Mike and Linda had never been to Chicago SO… I, of course, had to show them around! And, let me tell you, Saturday was one of the most gorgeous days I’ve ever experienced in Chicago. It almost brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it. But, then again, most of you know it could be rainy cats & dogs and Chicago would bring a tear to my eye ;-)
To start the Tour… I had just grabbed some yogurt and granola at Nookies before I met Mike and Linda so they picked me up in Old Town and we drove through Lincoln Park, Lakeview… and my favorite, Southport to ultimately land in Wrigleyville (so they could see all the neighborhoods). We grabbed an espresso from the Bucks and walked around Wrigley Field for a little while to admire one of the best fields in the history of baseball. I took them to Murphy’s on Belmont for a “Chicago” Hot Dog and then we jumped on Lake Shore Drive at Addison and drove south all the way to Soldier Field. We looped around via south Michigan Ave and drove all the way back to the north end… Bloomingdales! We found a grrrreat parking spot on Bellevue so that we could get out and walk to the John Hancock. There was a band playing down below… the lead singer sounded just like Tina Turner! We had to leave the city by 4 o’clock… so, our day in Chicago had to come to an end. We saw a lot in a very short time frame…I’m sure there will be many more Chi-trips to come from the Scanz Fam! I couldn’t be more honored to have had the privilege to introduce Mike & Linda to Chicago (my fav city)!
Next, we were off to meet fellow south Phillians at La Dolce Vita for dinner before Game Two. Aunt Teresa and Uncle Paul currently live in the Chicago area but AT and Mike & Linda grew up in south Philly together but never knew each other until Miners baseball introduced them… small world isn’t it? The dinner… the wine… the dessert… and my fav… the cappuccino… were all de-lici-ous (thanks again, M & L)! I wish Marion had Italian restaurants like that, oh to dream! Game Two was over and we headed back to the southern most part of the state. Actually, M & L are staying at Seven Gables… More dinners, late-night chats, coffee in the morning on the deck… and minimal work (just kidding!) in store for us this week! Game Three is tonight at Rent One Park. Wow, I don’t think we could have packed one more thing into this suitcase of a weekend. Happy Monday from my crew to yours.
p.s. The picture of Mike pumping gas… it’s against the law to pump gas in New Jersey… therefore I had to take a picture ;-) IL needs to adopt this law, don’t you think?
