I’m Nice, Are you?

by Nina on July 22, 2009

The story behind Operation Nice | Encouraging Individuals to be Proactively Nice.

Don’t you love it when people go out of their way to be nice? Like when someone waits to hold the door for you. Or when a stranger waves you into a line a traffic. Or even when a coworker shoots you a friendly smile along with a “have a nice day.” If everyone was a little bit nicer to the folks they encountered each day, perhaps the world would be a more pleasant place. Operation NICE was initiated to remind you that a little NICE goes a long way.

The other day I was waiting for an elevator in my building with one other gentleman. As the elevator arrived, I hesitated. I usually let others enter first, as a courtesy. But this gentleman held out his hand, motioning me to the door. As I walked through, he said with a chuckle, “You didn’t really think I was going to walk in here first, did you?” I responded, “Well, I don’t like to take anything for granted nowadays.”

That one minor gesture brightened my day! I started to think, “What a great world this would be if everyone had consideration for others.” It’s a shame that that’s not the case currently. It’s obvious that common courtesy is lacking in society today. Just drive down a major highway and you’ll see that.

What we all need is a little NICE.

Operation NICE encourages individuals to be proactively NICE. Stop by to read some positive, upbeat news stories (yes, they exist) about nice people. Download some tools to help you in your quest to communicate the concept of niceness. Share a story or two about how someone made your day.

It is not true that nice guys finish last. Nice guys are winners before the game ever starts.
- Addison Walker

Quote from the creator of Operation Nice, Melissa.

I believe that kindness can change the world, so it’s my mission to spread the concept of being nice, as simple as that may sound.

I think we should all adopt Melissa’s (who is über cool, by the way) mission & join her in spreading the concept of being nice to our fellow bloggers, readers & to the entire World! Being nice is a beautiful act. You can make a difference in some one’s life with one simple smile!!

Please remind yourself of this very old saying… If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

What a nice idea (no pun intended). I agree that we need to be nicer in the blog world. I wish people would be nice on Twitter as well! Even vague mean tweets can be offensive to readers.

Agreed! Great post — thank you for sharing that site and for the general reminder. Whether I’m in NYC or Bmore, city living can sometimes take its toll on everyone’s ability to be patient, polite and nice. I aim to be a good role model in this department for Little C, as I want her to grow up in a world of nice!

Funny you posted this! An old friend of mine started an organization. “Kind Campaign”. You may have heard of it? ANyway- it’s a similar concept, but it’s specific to females and their relationships with one another. It’s pretty cool. It is just kind of picking up… check it out!!
