I Miss The Hospital Underwear

by Nina on July 20, 2011

Months ago someone said to me, “oh, you’ll love the hospital underwear.”

I did not believe this person.

I bought and packed my own cotton briefs for recovery but I woke up Sunday morning wearing the second most comfortable pair of underwear I’ve ever had on in my life. [Hanky Pankys will always be #1!]

One of the darling nurses sent me home with numerous pairs for the first week or so but tragically I ran out yesterday. I never thought something so small and insignificant would make me somewhat sad.

I considered jumping on Amazon to see if I could order such products because needing more disposable underwear didn’t seem like a valid reason to call the postpartum department at the hospital… even though they did say I could call at any hour if I needed anything. Anything?

I stopped myself from making the call and decided it was time to put my big girl panties on and deal with it! And that’s just what I did.

So that’s my tragic little postpartum story. I love being Jack’s mommy. Recovery is going smoothly. I can slip on my shoes instead of having to use two hands to get them on my feet. Life is good. I just miss the hospital under pants!

I don’t know if it was me or not but yes, those underwear have magical powers. I also would put a pad between my underwear and scar in case something bumped it it wouldn’t hurt so badly. I still have 1 pair of underwear in my drawer that I may just wear as a joke for Adam!

Oh I loved the hospital underwear. Those are so necessary especially after a c-section I was so thankful to have some sent home with me.

This may be too late, but FYI for the future – they are machine washable (or, at least the ones I got from the hospital were). Don’t look like they would be, but they totally are.

Congratulations on your new little bundle of joy!

I had a c-section too and I LOVED the hospital undies. I took several pair home with me and I washed them! I just put them in a lingerie laundry bag and threw them in the washing machine and continued to wear them for almost a month. I used the little disposable, dry wipes that the hospital had (also brought some home) and put them across my incision to help keep it dry. I would change them several times a day. Sounds crazy, but blow drying your incision after a shower really helps too.

LOL! The joys of motherhood! Did you ever think you would be discussing this kind of thing?

I’m dying over this post! I loved those hospital panties so much. I remember with Jillian I had one pair left and I kept wanting to save it for a special day so I could enjoy it. They are seriously the most comfortable things after a c-section!

Hope you are doing well! That Jack sure is a precious little guy!

Are these the mesh underwear? I’ve heard they are so great.

This made me laugh… you’re too funny.
Someone must sell these outside of the hospital, right?
Hope you find them soon. Good to know recovery is going smootly. :-)

Hospital underwear is the best!!! I took home enough for a month since I was worried my regular underwear would irritate my new scar!

I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one who misses these! After our second daughter was born 7 weeks ago, I snatched up all of the ones I could find and was so sad when I used my last pair. Great post!

PS. found you through Blue-Eyed Bride!

I loved the underwear too, esp. since I had two July babies and regular underwear felt too warm. Enjoy these first wonderful days of mommy/parenthood!

This cracked me up! I’m glad I know what to look forward to and now I will be sure to steal as many pairs as possible :)

I’m so glad you are recovering well. Your little man is beautiful.

I’ve been following your blog for a while but have never commented, but this post cracked me up, so I just had to! I have never had a baby, but must admit those undies look comfy. Ha! Jack is absolutely precious. Congratulations!

I told you that those bad boys were amazing! I didn’t believe Julie when she first told me that. It is a definite you must try to believe.

This post made me laugh out loud! I’m a labor and delivery nurse and whenever I bust out our “hospital underwear” for the new moms right after delivery, most are appalled that they have to wear them. It’s nice to know that eventually they learn to love them! I’m happy to hear you’re doing well!

There are no words, except, yep I felt the same way! I loved those panties so much. The nurse gave me about two weeks worth and out of nowhere when they ran out I was like,’Wait, what am I supposed to do now”
I love that you admitted this, bc those underwear are about as precious as hanky pankys at this time in our lives xoxo
