I’m No Fool! Are You?

by Nina on January 27, 2012

I tweeted about this yesterday while shopping at Hobby Lobby but I’m still not over it. I personally believe the pillow industry is out to screw us!

Look at this pillow! Let’s start with the less obvious points – 1. the fill of the pillow was not even a real pillow insert. 2. The material was of poor quality. And then to the screaming fuchsia arrows – 1. the pillow is falling apart and it’s still living on the shelves of the store. 2. The 66% off clearance tag is $30.60. Could you even get passed the $EIGHTY NINE NINETY NINE price? Me either!

I headed over to TJMaxx and although our store is what I consider poorly stocked. I found these two striped pillows for our couch for $16.99 each. You can see the difference for yourself. Night and day.

I threw this up here for a quick visual. I’m not so sure but I do love the pillows. The pillows may end up somewhere else in our house but I’m very pleased with the quality and price from TJMaxx!

gah! i completely agree. i’m not exactly sure why people feel like they can charge $50-$150 for one freaking pillow. i’ve been on the hunt for pillows for our living room for the last few months. the ones i find that i love are always outrageous.

it’s like no one wants to give us pretty (and not expensive) pillows for our couches!

glad you found some ones that you love at tj!

Pier 1 has beautiful pillows and most were under $30, not counting the 20% off sale I noticed when I was there a few weeks ago!

I was just at Hobby Lobby and was thinking the same thing! Those prices are appalling.. that’s why I’m thinking about getting a sowing machine and making pillows myself. At least then I can choose the fabric. :) I never can find ones that I like and they are usually way overpriced. Glad you found some reasonable pillows at TJ Maxx! :)

I buy many of my pillows at Dillards at their end-of-season clearance. I have bought many Ralph Lauren and other nice brands for less than $20, some even less than $10. These are generally marked at $80-$100 regular price (which I wouldn’t pay for a throw pillow, especially since I CAN sew), but at least they are very well made, down filled, and have little extras like tucks, embroidery, pretty trim, etc. I’m with you, Nina, on those at HL. Who are they kidding? I’m also with you on our “poorly stocked” T.J. Maxx!

I gave up hunting for reasonably priced decorative pillows-I usually get my mind set on a particular look and then can never find precisely what I want! I’ve made my own covers for quite a while now and, once you get the hang of it, its super simple and a pretty quick project unless you’re doing embellishments. JoAnn Fabrics had their pillow forms half off last weekend so I stocked up and am getting geared up for my spring decor!

That really bothers me. I picked up a bunch of throw pillows on sale at places like Ross, TJ Maxx, and Target so I could use them for inserts. I sewed pillow covers for them. With pillow and fabric I spent about $8 for each one. Even better, if I want to change them I buy another yard of fabric and sew a new cover.
