Diaper Talk

by Nina on March 4, 2011

Earlier today on Twitter I asked for diaper recommendations and my followers did not let me down! Life (and pregnancy specifically) would be so different if I did not have Twitter and a blog. I can always count on honest opinions from everyone which I value and appreciate very much!

After hearing from Twitterland, I want to open up the discussion here too.

Pampers, Huggies, generic brands, Pure & Natural, Organic options, etc.

Did you use Swaddlers or regular newborn diapers?

Did you use newborns at all?

How long did your baby wear each diaper size? 1? 2? 3?

Did you use different diapers for bedtime?

Did you use a home-delivery subscription like Diapers.com or Amazon.com/mom?

Screen shot 2011-03-04 at 5.26.09 PM

I’ve already started setting up regular household items through Amazon.com/mom with Prime subscriptions. I will no longer be toting giant packages of toilet paper or paper towels through retail stores. Every three months Amazon will ship us the ordered supply of each to our doorstep! How great is that? I was also able to land my favorite dish soap at a fraction of retail cost and it will be delivered in a case of 6 every six months.

That’s three (3) items crossed off of my shopping list, savings between 39% – 27% off retail prices and free two-day shipping! It doesn’t get much better than that. I’m on a mission to be a well-organized, money-saving mama by the time this baby arrives in July!

I’m also interested in hearing from parents that use/d gDiapers because I’m anxious to hear their opinions.

Don’t get any wild ideas. I’m NOT going to use cloth diapers. Not even considering it.

gDiapers are considered a “hybrid”, you can see the basics on the images below. From my research, you get the best of both worlds in one!

I like the idea of not adding additional waste to the already overfilled landfills but still having the convenience of a disposable diaper. Flushable is definitely a huge BONUS. But I’m curious to know how bulky they are with the covers, how well they fit with babies clothes and how well they absorb and protect babies bottoms.

I’m looking forward to hearing about your diaper experiences and recommendations. Thank you in advance!

*I’ve received a few questions about Amazon.com/mom, how to sign up and how to use it. I will do my very best to deliver all the information I have in a post, hopefully later tonight or tomorrow.

Pampers, Huggies, generic brands, Pure & Natural, Organic options, etc. Pampers and Huggies are all we have used

Did you use Swaddlers or regular newborn diapers? We used swaddlers in the hospital and for quite awhile

Did you use newborns at all? Yep, but my baby was pretty small 5 pounds 15 ounces so we were in them for awhile

How long did your baby wear each diaper size? 1? 2? 3?
We were in ones from about 3-7 months and just moved up to size 2.

Did you use different diapers for bedtime? not yet–but will probably start since she has become a tummy sleeper and we are seeing leaks!

Did you use a home-delivery subscription like Diapers.com or Amazon.com/mom?
amazon mom has been the best deal I have found.

1. Pampers Swaddlers WITH the absorbency strip (you can see if the diaper is wet from the outside – critical). Have tried Huggies with the umbilical cord cut out and these did NOT work. Leaked all over the place. We have a boy, though – which, I will tell you, is a diaper adventure in and of itself. I would not use anything other than Pampers Swaddlers with the absorbency strip!

2. We had a registry at Diapers.com and got 6 months of diapers as a gift (you can register for diapers by the month, which I recommend – I imagine Amazon has a similar feature). So I use Diapers.com BUT I have also taken advantage of Amazon.com/mom and the coupons b/c the savings are so good and we’ll be in diapers for 2-3 years :) My advice is to use a combination of sites b/c different ones have different advantages (i.e. sometimes Diapers.com has great sales or promotions, etc – so stay on the various lists!)

3. Our boy was 7 pounds, 11 ounces and we’re still in Newborn at 3 weeks. I think we could use Size 1, but since we have Newborn size left, I am going to use them!

I used/use Pampers. I tried huggies but they leaked a lot.

I used swaddlers with my first until she grew out of them then I switched to baby dry. With my son I got swaddlers from the hospital so I used those till they ran out and then bought baby dry.

With my daughter I used newborns for about 2 months. With my son he was 9lb so I used them for about 2 weeks then had to move to size 1.

I dont remember when she moved up sizes but I know she was in 4′s at 18 months and wore them till we potty trained at almost 3 years old. My son is 21 months and has been in 5 since about 15 months, but he was a big baby.

I never had a problem with leaks at night with my daughter so she wore the same diapers. My son has a problem with leaks at night but he’s already in a size 5 so I don’t now what i’m going to do I’m thinking about cutting off liquids a couple hours before bed to see if that helps.

I didn’t even know about the home delivery subscription but I’m going to look into it now.

i’m not a mom (yet) but i did recently take an 8 month vacation from the corporate world and nannied for a newborn. the family used a combo of both g-diapers & natural ones from whole foods. g-diapers were cool, loved the concept, & worked pretty well except for the whole breast-milk-fed-baby enormous “how did that much come out of this tiny thing” blow outs. but let’s face it, i’m not so sure a standard diaper would hold that in either! the only thing with g is the “ick” factor of changing table to bathroom, where with a reg. you get to roll it up and be done with it all while wresting a wiggle worm!

I taught pre-school with toddlers before becoming a SAHM and in my experiences there I discovered that out of all of the diapers we changed (A TON) everyone agreed that the generic brand of diapers at Target and Whole Foods (they are basically the same) are the best at keeping dry and avoiding messes! SO, with Madison we have been using the Target brand and I LOVE them! She is a petite baby so at 7 weeks we are just now using Size 1…we used Newborn up until a few days ago! Plus the Size 1′s have polka dots on the…so cute! Hope this helps!! Good Luck!

We are a Pampers family. We tried Huggies once and it was a big mistake. Our little guy leaked everywhere. Needless to say, we stick to Pampers and Pampers only.

We used swaddlers for some time. I really liked them.

Our guy was born at 5lbs 13ozs so we used newborns for awhile.

We were in ones for about 4 months and then moved up to size 2, which he is currently in during the day. We have just switched to using size 3 at night.

We just started using size 3 diapers at night. Just went up a size to avoid messes at night and thus far, it has worked great.

I am a member of Amazonmom but haven’t used it yet for diapers. This is only because we received so many diapers at all of our baby showers that we have yet to buy any and Mason is now 6 months old!! I highly recommend registering for diapers!

Definitely Pampers Swaddlers. They just seem to fit newborns better and they’re softer than Huggies. Huggies are a little stiff and too wide through the crotch area. We used Pampers Cruisers when our babies got bigger. It’ worth the little bit of extra money to not have to worry about leaks, and I never had a problem with diaper rash. On the few occasions that I tried other brands, diaper rash always became an issue.

I definitely feel that Pampers provide better leak protection than any other brand. I would rather pay a little more for them to have to change them less often and not worry about leaks. And, I’m definitely a fan of Amazon Mom – I don’t think you can find diapers for a better deal, especially if you add a 20% off coupon from Parents magazine. They offer some type of coupon code each month.

I felt swaddlers were worthwhile, just softer for the newborns. I used newborn size for a few weeks (my daughter was 7lbs, 10oz at birth) and then seem to remember using 1′s for quite a while. I do remember that 3′s lasted forever – many, many months on those!

We use Huggies/Pampers/Costcoduring the day. We buy what is on sale and 2 of the grocery stores in town have fuel perks as an added bonus. We always use Pampers baby dry at night in one size larger. Pampers are soft but I’ve had the same experience with all the other brands, just a couple of leaks. Costco diapers are exactly the same as Huggies. Also, Pampers and Huggies have rewards programs. There is a code on the sleeves of diapers, that you enter through their websites. I know you only asked about diapers but Costco wipes are by far the best!! Huggies and Pampers wipes are too thick or thin, and you end up wasting more than you need.

My guy was never in newborn diapers, he weighed 10lb 12 oz at birth, so my husband did some returning when we got home from the hospital. He will be a year on the 14th and is in size fours.

I am a FULL time cloth diaper-er (if that’s a word.)

I will tell you this…gDiapers are really cute, they are the first ”step” into cloth. However…they are VERY awkward to use…if you want the ”cute” factor of the gDipes…you should just go with a diaper cover.

Also, the flushable aspect of them…they ARE flushable…once you tear the sides of the insert off and toss just the interior (kind of messy and awkward).

And finally, you end up changing the cover A LOT because the insides aren’t all waterproof, it’s only like a waterproof hammock…so baby pee and poo (especially breastfed poo which is much runnier…haha sorry!) gets all over the cover and leaks onto clothes quicker. Usually cloth diapers are PUL (a waterproof fabric) on the outside so there are no leaks vs a cotton like the gDiapers.

Hope all that helped, sorry it’s an essay! ;) Let me know if you have any other questions!!!

I have some gdiapers and they work for us, but if you are really going to consider cloth, I adore our Fuzzibunz. Julia (My life in Transition) has a few great posts on cloth diapering (if this is something you are going to do). If I stayed at home, I would cloth diaper all the time for sure. It’s really easy, IMO. But the state of Michigan will not allow cloth diapers in licensend day cares, so we have a few that we use on nights and weekends.

We’ve tried Pampers, Huggies, Luvs and Up&Up, and we prefer Luvs or Huggies. Last year the Pampers had the drymax in them and the mesh lining would always stick to Spencer’s skin and we’d have to pull it off. It always made me nervous that it would tear his skin. I hated them. I guess not all the Pampers have this, but I made the decision to not use them anymore because of that. We use Amazon Mom (LOVE!) and get the Luvs delivered to us every 6ish weeks. He grew out of size one really quickly, but he was already 9.2` at birth! We were in size two until maybe 5 months and we have been in size 3 since then. Technically he weighs enough to go into size 4 (he’s about 21 lbs) but he easily fits into size 3 so I’m not going to move up yet. I think a lot of it depends on where your babe carries his/her weight.

Pampers, Huggies, generic brands, Pure & Natural, Organic options, etc.
We started out with the pampers swaddlers in newborn or preemie size (he was 7.7 at birth at got down to 6.11) at first. We ended up switching to huggies (supreme version – called little snugglers at that size i think) because the pampers leaked a lot for us! I would have just put a new diaper on and next thing i know, he the back of his clothes would be soaked in tee-tee. I have no idea how a brand new diaper didn’t catch any of it and it ended up all over the back, but that’s what kept happening to us. We never had that problem with the huggies. I’ve heard varying opinions, but most people around here say pampers for girls and huggies for boys – i think it just depends on their body type or something. I will also say, no matter what diaper you will have some “blow outs” on occasion when they are little – especially if breastfeeding.

Shortly after he got into a size 3 (when he was around 7 months), a friend asked me if i’d tried the target brand diapers and i had actually been meaning too. I picked up a small package and we’ve never looked back. They haven’t leaked once – I wish I would have tried them sooner. With my next I’ll probably try them around size 2.

Did you use Swaddlers or regular newborn diapers? Pampers swaddlers, then moved to the huggies equivalent instead.

Did you use newborns at all? We did. My son was 7.7 at birth and got down to 6.11 and the others were just too big at first.

How long did your baby wear each diaper size? 1? 2? 3?
I don’t remember when we moved from 1 to 2, but he wore size 2 until about 7 months (17lbs). Then wore a size 3 until 14 or 15 months (23lbs). He is still in a 4 at 21 months.

Did you use different diapers for bedtime? we started using a different diaper at night probably around 4 or 5 months. He was wearing a size 2 then and I would just put him in a size 3 at night and it worked fine. Then when he fit good in a size 3, I started buying the huggie overnights in a size 4 (i could never find them in a 3, so that’s why i went up a size in them too). He stayed in the overnights in a size 4 even after he moved to a size 4 in the daytime and they still did the trick. I actually was out of nighttime diapers and decided to just try the regular one, and we haven’t gone back to them. He quit wearing them around 16-17 months….and I probably could have done away with after we dropped the bedtime nursing. He still goes a lot at night, but our target diapers hold it all.

Did you use a home-delivery subscription like Diapers.com or Amazon.com/mom?
No I didn’t, but seeing all these deals I think I should have :) My capital one card does get 10 points per dollar at target.com, so I started buying diapers there.

-One more thing, as for wipes I have only used huggies, pampers, and target – but i highly recommend huggies out of those 3. The pampers wipes are just too thin, as are the target ones.

Nina,
I made the mistake of buying A LOT of gdiapers prior to trying them out. Although I love the look, they aren’t the best in cloth diapering. They do get pretty messy and the insert bunches up inside the diaper cover. A lot of my friends use Thirsties and love them. I have a few FuzziBunz that I love. They are an all in one diaper. You have more to wash but they are less mess and really soft on her bottom. Hope that helps!

I like using Luvs. We had a boy first and I liked Pampers Swadlers for a while. He was 9 lbs when he was born so we went through the small sizes pretty quickly. I have learned to size up earlier than you think and it has helped me avoid the up the back blow outs – which are always super awesome -ha! I recommend not buying a large quantity of any one type/size until you are sure you like them. I made that mistake the first time around.

My daughter just turned a year old and she has been in Luvs since day one. I never had to use a different diaper at night, but did have occasional trouble with leaks in the summer when my son got older. We live in AZ and it is sooo hot in the summer, that he drinks so much water.

Pampers, Huggies, generic brands, Pure & Natural, Organic options, etc.:
— Pampers for sure. They are the softest and never leak. We tried Huggies once because we were given a package and they leaked every time. We also tried G Diapers because I wanted to be resourceful, but they leaked everytime too :(

Did you use Swaddlers or regular newborn diapers?
—We have used and continue to use Pampers Sensitive Swaddlers. They are so much softer than any other diaper and have the least amount of chemical smell that disposables have.

Did you use newborns at all?
—Yes, we used newborn for awhile. She was 7lb 3oz when she was born, dropped to a little under 7 lbs. I can’t remember when we stopped using them though.

How long did your baby wear each diaper size? 1? 2? 3?
—I can’t remember how long we were in each size! However, she is still in size 3 at nearly 18 months, with room to grow. But she is in the 10th percentile for weight.

Did you use different diapers for bedtime?
—No. When her diapers started getting too full through the night it was usually time to move to the next size. Plus, the nighttime diapers are not as soft and cuddly as sensitive swaddlers.

Did you use a home-delivery subscription like Diapers.com or Amazon.com/mom?
—I missed the memo that their was a service like this, ha!

I have tried Pampers, Huggies and CVS brand….hated the CVS brand…prefer Pampers but, do use Huggies if on sale. My dtr. is now One and in size 4..she seemed to stay in each size for a few months but, that really does vary from baby to baby. My dtr. is long so although, there is room in the size 4 she is more comfortable!! You’ll figure it out as you go along. I do now have to use the overnight Huggies b/c she tends to pee pee alot and was soaking herself by morning but, that started around 11 months old. Its all a learnign process!! but, so amazing how you just figure it out..with the help of family and friends too :)

Pampers, Huggies, generic brands, Pure & Natural, Organic options, etc.:
— Pampers for sure. I just didn’t like the others that I tried as much.

Did you use Swaddlers or regular newborn diapers?
—We use Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive. They have a strip that tells you if the baby is wet. In between sizes I use regular Pampers Swaddlers because they come in an in-between size–Size 1-2 and Size 2-3.

Did you use newborns at all?
—Yes, we even needed preemie size for the first 2 weeks. She was born at 6lbs 12 oz, but was 21 inches long. That’s a skinny baby! (Don’t worry, she’s plumped up nicely.)

How long did your baby wear each diaper size? 1? 2? 3?
—She was in preemie/newborn for about a month. Size 1 until 2.5 months, then a box of size 1-2, size 2 for three months, and is still in size 2-3 (she 7.5 months old).

Did you use different diapers for bedtime?
—Not yet, but my friends with boys need them.

Did you use a home-delivery subscription like Diapers.com or Amazon.com/mom?
—I use Amazon.com/mom for everything I possibly can. The subscribe & save option makes them the cheapest diapers around.

Pampers, Huggies, generic brands, Pure & Natural, Organic options, etc. – We’ve tried Pampers and Huggies. Pampers Sensitive Swaddlers are our absolute FAVORITES! They are the most absorbent and the softest on our little one’s skin.

Did you use newborns at all? Yes, we were in newborns for about 5 weeks. She weighed 7 lb 10 oz at birth.

How long did your baby wear each diaper size? 1? 2? 3? We are 12 weeks today and have been in size 1 since week 5. We’re getting close to moving to size 2.

Did you use different diapers for bedtime? Nope!

Did you use a home-delivery subscription like Diapers.com or Amazon.com/mom? No, because honestly, we’ve been gifted so many diapers that we’ve only had to buy 1 pack on our own!!
