Coffee & a New Book

by Nina on June 10, 2009

It’s officially mid-week (aka Hump Day). As I sit in the kitchen of my parent’s house (gasp, if you must) listening to my mother and sister have a conversation about all sorts of random topics (I’m choosing not to participate to keep the peace), I find myself thinking about the 56 pages of Love the One Your With that I just read over my morning latte, recalling yesterday and anxiously ready to find out what today has in store for me. Yes, technically today has started being that it is 10:01 a.m. here in the Midwest but I’m still in my pajamas (one of the many luxuries, or lack of, that come with working for yourself) and just opened my MacBook for the first time today so in my world the day is just taking off!

I’ve mentioned at least once or twice that I don’t normally read books cover to cover. Well, I’m here to report that I have a  new found love (or obsession) with finishing a book all the way to the end. I’m finding myself wanting to turn the pages faster & faster. It took a good long fight with myself to finish Tori Spelling’s first book that had been on my nightstand since it was first released. Once I did that, one would think I had finished a five-year residency & now could do surgery on my own. I know I bit dramatic but that’s me!

Speaking of me, I’ve been writing this blog for over three years now and I used to share my daily activities and thoughts more freely. We are going to get back to basics starting today. You can expect to hear more about my trips to the grocery store, random run-ins with people I less than care for, how I prefer to drink wine out of GINORMOUS sized glasses, how disappointed I am when the waitress brings me what looks like a tasting glass from a local winery, trips to the city, long chats with people that inspire me to be a better person, weddings and all of the wonderful things that go along with the milestone that so many people that I love welcome me to take part in whether it’s as a guest or the person in the back of the church that makes the groomsman spit his gum into my hand to ensure he doesn’t look like a cow eating grass during the beautiful ceremony that is getting ready to take place, my dating life, romantic stories gone bad, books and movies & how we can relate them to our own lives, my dying need for the new iPhone or my latest obsessed for an over-sized fabulous piece of leather with two handles otherwise known as a handbag (so materialistic of me, I know!)… and of course, we’ll continue to hit up the normal topics too.

This blog has been and always will be 110% M.E. whether about myself directly or about a restaurant recommendation or a pair of ridiculously expensive pair of shoes I’m coveting. I’d rather be myself and be hated by a few people than be something than I’m not, wouldn’t you?

Now, I’m going to go upstairs, put on my new J.Crew t-shirt with ruffled sleeves (that I now want in every color), use my make-up pallet for the cosmetically-challenged, do something with my hair (that is my natural color though now has to be colored by a professional thanks to early grayness) and head out to meet one of my best friends for lunch. Speaking of friends, we’ll hit up the friendship topic too!

So here’s to being Us. You and Me. Let’s stand strong behind our likes, dislikes, morals and values even if they aren’t the same. Together we won’t let anyone get in our way. Here’s to Us being Us and kicking major ass along the way.

In response to how I found this ridiculous blog, a former acquaintance of Nina’s in the Chicago area turned me on to it for a laugh. I live in Manhattan and an a stylist. I must admit that the silliness and triteness of the blog is something. Also, I checked the blogs of most who left the kiss up comments and found that they also have the same kind of ridiculous blogs that feed off of each other. In my world designers come to me to get my clients to wear their pieces. I can’t believe that people can’t find what you recommend on their own. My clients hire me b/c they are too busy with their work along with not being good at picking fashion. I am in my least busy season and got quite a laugh out of all of you. It’s a world of entitlement and superficiality that is not to be believed. Bye, and thanks for the strange enlightenment.

Nina, I so thought of you yesterday. Wilton ( the company that specializes in cake decorating) has a tent sale and they had EVERYTHING!!!! What I saw that iI really thought you would like was all this paper with different prints on either side. So many fun things that I kept looking at thinking “Nina would love this!” They even had tons of the Martha Stuart crafts. Love it!!! Loved your post today!

thanks for going back to the “old way” of doing things. i have always lived vicariously through your life experiences. you do things that i only wish i had done when i was single, smart (yes, i was at one point) and young. and as for your readers who dispise who you are and what you do, why do they keep reading????? it’s like watching a tv show you hate. why?? do you really not hate it as much as you say or do you hate it out of envy? jealously rears it’s ugly head in so many ways and brings out the very worst in people — and some of your readers are these very people.
keep rockin’ on with your bad self and never forget to always consider the source!
love and hugs.

Looking forward to the new/old way of doing things. As far as the above comment, please don’t let her NYC attitude get you down. Some people cannot go through this world without passing judgement on everyone around them. You’re not doing anything to this person, but yet she feels the need to attack and deminish your blog. If she’s such a fabulous stylist, then why would she even care to comment on what she calls “silly and trite”. And if she gets her kicks by leaving nasty comments on people’s personal blogs, then she needs to look in the mirror and maybe consider who really is trite and silly. Our blogs are what we want them to be, they represent us, so please don’t pass judgement on things you just don’t understand.

Good for you, friend! I’m so glad that you are making this very wise decision. There are too many haters out there and I’m sick of them!

*Here’s to Us being Us and kicking major ass along the way.* I love it!

I just wanted to say I truly enjoy this blog. I find it refreshing and comforting to read about someone who like me is trying to find their way, create a balanced life, and occasionally find a fabulous Target deal or that perfect date night outfit. There is nothing “trite” or “silly” about someone being honest about the way they live and the experiences they have. Life isn’t always super glamorous or full of success but I think it is always worth sharing!

I don’t know Nina personally, so this isn’t “kissing up”. Just a thank you from one 20-something to another…I really appreciate your perspective and honesty. .meg.

First, I have only been part of this “blogosphere” for nine months. So I don’t remember Nina’s beginings. But I’m excited to read these “new”adventures!

Next, if “someone” is in her SLOW season, wouldn’t they NEED TO (ESPECIALLY in this economy) generate some business? I’m surprised that Michele wants to leave an anonymous comment rather than one that would link up potential clients to her wonderful web site from which she could grow an ever so successful business. I’m sure that many more people read this blog than comment and I’d venture to say that some are even in the NYC market…hmmm….very interesting and curious!

YAY for YOU Nina!!! Yours is one of the first blogs I discovered during my wedding planning last year and look forward to the daily posts, especially the “703″ updates!! This has been a crazy year of job searching, relocating to a small town and trying to adjust to a new way of life and looking forward to your daily updates bring a smile to my day.

Forget all the “negative” nay-sayers and be true to yourself…keep all those personal updates about YOU and your life.

Can’t wait to get back to working (and hopefully my big ‘ol salary again) to enjoy some of your fab shopping tips…oh how I miss my Nord & Bloomie sprees!! : )

Good for you! Blogging should be about what you want to write when you want to write it.

I always think it is funny when people assume our lives are nothing more than what we write. Clearly we’re all only “blog” deep.

Hope you had a fabulous day. I am tres jealous of the shirt you posted on Twitter.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one out there dealing with early gray hairs! Egh. I thought going brunette again would be less maintenance – boy was I wrong!

Love your blog! I will be reading about what you are doing whether it be mundane or miraculous!

You know I am much older than most of the bloggers. There are things I have learned through the years – one is that people who criticize, demean, humiliate, etc. have very low opinions of themselves. They try to make others feel badly so as to make themselves feel superior. I remember when my mother told me this. I didn’t believe it. All I knew at the time was that someone had hurt me! But now, as with so many other things, I know she was definitely on point.

I quite enjoy our blogs. In the world today with all the horrors and tragedies, our blogs are a nice escape. We bloggers know – because many of us have become friends IRL – that there is much more to us than merely the discount code to our favorite stores ;-)

It’s not a NYC attitude, it’s poor manners/ bad etiquette. I’m a born & raised NY’er & I wouldn’t dream of being rude for the amusement of it. Blogging isn’t for everyone…neither is scrapbooking or painting but I don’t make fun of people that do it. I am sure Michelle’s little comment gave her a little. Ooh. If she is so fabulous, why is she cruising blogs leaving crappy comments? Nice…

I thought I was the only one out there who doesn’t care what wine goes in what glass but wants it all in the supersized glass! Maybe it mentally makes you think you’re drinking less of it! :)

Just read the comments and I have no words. Everyone has already said them. Nina… remember this is your space… like an apartment. If someone came into your house and started insulting you, you have the right to do whatever you want. Delete or keep. It’s your choice. Love your blog…

Oh and yes, I’m totally kissing up right now because that gives me satisfaction. Yea whatever.
