Maybe the best comment EVER. My good friend & Southern girl, Leah commented on Leila’s post yesterday and this is what it said…
Football Season in the South
Planning for the fall football season in the South is radically different
than up North. For those who are planning a football trip South, here are
some helpful hints.
Women’s Accessories:
NORTH: Chap Stick in back pocket and a $20 bill in the front pocket.
SOUTH: Louis Vuitton duffel with two lipsticks, waterproof mascara, and a
fifth of bourbon. Money not necessary – that’s what dates are for.
Stadium Size:
NORTH: College football stadiums hold 20,000 people.
SOUTH: High school football stadiums hold 20,000 people.
Fathers:
NORTH: Expect their daughters to understand Sylvia Plath.
SOUTH: Expect their daughters to understand pass interference.
Campus Decor:
NORTH: Statues of founding fathers.
SOUTH: Statues of Heisman trophy winners.
Homecoming Queen:
NORTH: Also a physics major.
SOUTH: Also Miss America.
Heroes:
NORTH: Rudy Giuliani.
SOUTH: Herschel Walker & Peyton Manning.
Getting Tickets:
NORTH: 5 days before the game you walk into the ticket office on campus.
SOUTH: 5 months before the game you walk into the ticket office on campus,
make a large financial contribution, and put name on a waiting list for
tickets.
Friday Classes After a Thursday Night Game:
NORTH: Students and teachers not sure they’re going to the game, because
they have classes on Friday.
SOUTH: Teachers cancel Friday classes because they don’t want to see the few
hung over students that might actually make it to class.
Parking:
NORTH: An hour before game time, the University opens the campus for game
parking.
SOUTH: RVs sporting their school flags begin arriving on Wednesday for the
weekend festivities. The really faithful arrive on Tuesday.
Game Day:
NORTH: A few students party in the dorm and watch ESPN on TV.
SOUTH: Every student wakes up, has a beer for breakfast, and rushes over to
where ESPN is broadcasting “Game Day Live” to get on camera and wave to the
idiots up north who wonder why “Game Day Live” is never broadcast from their
campus.
Tailgating:
NORTH: Raw meat on a grill, beer with lime in it, listening to local radio
station with truck tailgate down.
SOUTH: 30-foot custom pig-shaped smoker fires up at dawn. Cooking
accompanied by live performance from the Dave Matthews Band, who come over
during breaks and ask for a hit off bottle of bourbon.
Getting to the Stadium:
NORTH: You ask “Where’s the stadium?” When you find it, you walk right in.
SOUTH: When you’re near it, you’ll hear it. On game day it is the state’s
third largest city.
Concessions:
NORTH: Drinks served in a paper cup, filled to the top with soda.
SOUTH: Drinks served in a plastic cup, with the home team’s mascot on it,
filled less than half way with soda, to ensure enough room for bourbon.
When National Anthem is Played:
NORTH: Stands are less than half full, and less than half of them stand up.
SOUTH: 100,000 fans, all standing, sing along in perfect four-part harmony.
The Smell in the Air After the First Score:
NORTH: Nothing changes.
SOUTH: Fireworks, with a touch of bourbon.
Commentary (Male):
NORTH: “Nice play.”
SOUTH: “Dammit, you slow sumbitch – tackle him and break his legs.”
Commentary (Female):
NORTH: “My, this certainly is a violent sport.”
SOUTH: “Dammit, you slow sumbitch – tackle him and break his legs.”
Announcers:
NORTH: Neutral and paid.
SOUTH: Announcer harmonizes with the crowd in the fight song, with a tear in
his eye because he is so proud of his team.
After the Game:
NORTH: The stadium is empty way before the game ends.
SOUTH: Another rack of ribs goes on the smoker, while somebody goes to the
nearest package store for more bourbon, and planning begins for next week’s game.
HOW MANY SEC STUDENTS DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE A LIGHT BULB?
At VANDERBILT: It takes two, one to change the bulb and one more to explain
how they did it every bit as good as the bulbs changed at Harvard.
At GEORGIA: It takes two, one to change the bulb and one to stabilize the
rolling beer cooler the bulb changer is using for a ladder.
At FLORIDA: It takes four, one to screw in the bulb and three to figure out
how to get stoned off the old one.
At ALABAMA: It takes five, one to change it, three to reminisce about how
The Bear would have done it, and one to throw the old bulb at an NCAA
investigator.
At OLE MISS: It takes six, one to change it, two to mix the drinks and three
to find the perfect J. Crew outfit to wear for the occasion.
At LSU: It takes seven, and each one gets credit for five Semester hours.
At KENTUCKY : It takes eight, one to screw it in and seven to discuss how
much brighter it seems to shine during basketball season.
At TENNESSEE: It takes ten, two to figure out how to screw it in, two to buy
an orange lamp shade, and six to phone a radio call-in show and talk about
how much they hate Alabama.
At MISSISSIPPI STATE: It takes fifteen, one to screw in the bulb, two to buy
the Skoal, and twelve to yell, “GO TO HELL, OLE MISS”.
At AUBURN: It takes one hundred, one to change it, forty-nine to talk about
how they did it better than at Bama and Georgia, and fifty to get drunk and
roll Toomer’s Corner when finished.
At SOUTH CAROLINA: It takes 80,000, one to screw it in and 79,999 to discuss
how this finally will be the year that they have a decent football team.
At ARKANSAS: None. There is no electricity in Arkansas

LOVE IT! This is the best and so, so true. Can’t WAIT for tonight and college football kickoff!!!
.-= Missy´s last blog ..Fall Clothes =-.
Hysterical!!! Very true- I went to University of Delaware, whereas my sister went to Clemson…There was a big difference at games:)
I love this – it’s SO, SO, SO true!! I went to Ole Miss (HOTTY TODDY!!!) and what they say about us (the good stuff, anyway) is true. We have the best game-day atmosphere in all of college football with the Grove. We dressed up for all of the games (meaning, heels, dresses, etc. – the whole nine yards, and our dates wore ties. Yes, we had dates to football games.)
And, we’re supposed to have a good team this year! I’ll be at a UGA game-day party on Saturday and then watching my alma mater on ESPN on Sunday. I love college football, especially SEC football!
This is hilarious and oh so true! And not just for the SEC, but for the Big XII as well!
However, I must defend Bucky Badger and the University of Wisconsin. Although in the north, most of the “southern” qualifications are represented well in Madison
(which may be why it’s always on the top ten party schools of the princeton review?) I have spent MANY MANY a Saturday mornings in my life grilling brats at 7:30 AM to wash down with some tastey drink pre-morning games. <3 i love that Badger
.-= shugarbride´s last blog ..thank you, Jesus. =-.
Since I am a Notre Dame Gal I will have to say that they are a combination of the two.
I just love the ND games
I got this as an email forward last year during football season. Love it! And it’s so true! And I don’t care what anyone says– SEC is completely unique!
Oh my gosh, this was hilarious! I particularly like the South Carolina light-bulb story – my in-laws and husband LOVE that time, and for as long as I’ve been a fan, all they ever talk about is how “this year” will be “the” year for them
.-= Practically Perfect…´s last blog ..Scrubs and Shoes =-.
Oops – that should read “team”, not “time”!
.-= Practically Perfect…´s last blog ..Scrubs and Shoes =-.
Love it! Only thing I would change – at Tennessee would talk about how much we hate Florida, not bama haha!
This is one of my favorite email forwards too! LOVE IT! And it is seriously SO true! Only 48 hours ’til our kickoff! GO BIG BLUE!

This was so great to read as I am gearing up to attend The University of Kentucky football game on Saturday. I am girl who was raised in Big Ten football but went to school in the South. SO with that said, I know there is a true difference. Although, you have to throw Big Ten fans some credit. They tail gate hard just not in cute sun-dresses and non practical shoes. Love the blog!

I love being from the South!!!!! All the bourbon quotes so true. Bourbon is my drink of choice. Oh my, how bad Toomer’s Corner was rolled last year. And the last part is the funniest of all, Arkansas having no electricity. A fellow Tennessean appreciates that one. Ha!

We’re kickin’ it off southern-style tonight @ the NCSU vs. USC game — Go Pack!

This had me rolling… all except the AR part.
Oh how I miss SEC football. It’s just not the same living in CO now!
.-= Abbie´s last blog ..Giveaway Reminder… =-.
Actually, there needs to be the addition of 100,000 seats to college stadiums in the Big Ten. Funny but obviously written by an SEC fan. More people tailgate without tickets outside of an OSU game than the whole student body of any SEC school.

Gotta second the badger comment! As a UW alumni -we know how to bring it down on game day!
Cute comment, but….not totally spot on!

This was utterly amazing and so true! I echo Practically Perfect, our gamecocks have been preaching that for as long as I’ve been a fan! This makes me even more excited for football season!

Love this and so true about the south-proud of it too! No Hotty Totty and they can go to Hades! MSU all the way!
Nina, this is so true! We take our football very seriously down South!

I love it! This is so true! Southerners LOVE football!!

I love this! It’s especially true since I *may* have nearly been denied admission to a Bowl Game because my Louis was over the regulation size for bags allowed in the game…

This had me CRACKING up! Going to school in the SEC (USC) I can completely relate! And the worst part of ALL of that hoopla for football season? We weren’t even good!!!

Love This! It’s all so true…Y’all had me at “Southern girl’s LVuitton contents”
.-= missjanice´s last blog ..SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL CHILDREN’S GOOD MANNERS MONTH =-.
I’ve gotta take a stand with my fellow Big 10′ers (what up, Wisconsin!!)…Michigan games aren’t anything like these mysterious “North” games! With 120,000 people at each football game, and WAY more than that at tailgates, we take football pretty damn seriously!
.-= Shaina´s last blog ..Photos!!! =-.
Of course, that being said, my new adopted school (i.e. my husband’s grad school) is clearly a basketball school, and I think that totally sucks!
