DAILY DIARY

Have you heard the buzz about the health concerns with ingredients in some sunscreens? My mother was on this like white on rice! My sister-in-law and I were discussing one day so she pulled up EWG's (Environmental Working Group) Skin Deep 2012 Sunscreen Guide. It's the easiest way to check your sunscreens. It's a well-organized site! We checked all of our current sunscreens and was also able to find the top rated sunscreens on the market.

After checking EWG's Skin Deep 2012, I threw away all of the sunscreens and tanning lotions above. The Banana Boat Ultra Defense's overall score was a 7. The Neutrogena Wet Skin SPF30 also scored a 7. Both contained both RETINYL ACETATE (VITMIN A ACETATE) and OXYBENZONE.

The Australian Gold Sheer Coverage scored a 5 which is not bad, but mine was over a year old so I pitched it along with the others. The Australian Gold Continuous Spray SPF15 scored a 7 and contained OXYBENZONE. I was sadden to have to throw these away because I love the smell of Australian Gold but health and safety comes first!

MD MOMS Baby Silk Babysafe sunscreen towelettes scored well with a 4. The reasoning behind the higher score for this product was due to the fragrance only. We don't have any issues with the fragrance in Baby Silk products so we use these for unexpected quick trips outside. I keep the package in my purse which is very handy.

The sunscreens we found to have some of the best ratings and luckily also found in our diaper/beach bags were:

California Baby, Coopertone Water Babies Pure & Simple, and Kiss My Face Suncare products (not shown). I ordered the Kiss My Face sunscreens on Amazon.

Be sure to check out EWG's Skin Deep 2012 Sunscreen Report to make sure your sunscreens are safe for you and your family!

I had been doing research on the best sunscreen for babies & ran across the EWG site as well. I even downloaded the app on my phone so I could check it while out & about. We went with Waterbabies Pure & Simple too! I need to get some of those wipes to keep in the diaperbag. Thanks for sharing this important information.

I ran across the EWG sunscreen website a couple weeks ago, when I was researching sunscreens that are safe to use during pregnancy. What a great tool!

Kodi, you’re correct you should use 1s and 2s but some of them up to 5 you must look at the details to see where the high rating is coming from. You’ll see some have higher score due to fragrance only! For example, the wipes do NOT on contain any of the harmful chemicals but they do have a fragrance therefore it’s marked higher. The site breaks everything down very nicely!
