Weekend Recap & Paint Swatches

posted by ninahelleny in DAILY DIARY

Happy Monday, everyone!

We had a very relaxing weekend. Most of the weekend was spent in the garage working on our Craigslist cabinet. What a find. I'm so crazy about it. I took pictures with the Nikon for "before & after" results but this is a quick shot I captured via iPhone. It is now completely sanded down, doors are off and all hardware has been removed. It's ready for a couple coats of paint and then it will be able to join us inside! *At the end of this post, there are some potential paint colors. Would love to hear your opinions!

I used my beautimous Le Creuset TeaKettle from Erin & Mrs. Mojito for the first time. I love the sound of a whistling teapot! Thank you again for such a thoughtful gift. I know I'm supposed to remove the LC label but I can't get it off. ;)

I made my first attempt at Cake Pops via Bakerella and Beach Bum & Baby but I got extremely frustrated when I realized I had made my balls too big [You can insert whatever level of dirty thinking, joke, etc. you would like here], did not prepare nearly enough Candy Melts for dipping and forgot to find a piece of styrofoam for drying. I was so mad at myself. I threw most of them in the trash!

Since I didn't have a piece of styrofoam for drying, the ones that survived ended up being upside-down cake pops. It could have been worse, I guess. Here are the ones that made the cut...

A friend sent me this link to Bakerella's video on Amazon this morning. After watching the video, I am going to attempt to make Cake Pops again. Maybe even this week. I will not let the Cake Pops get the best of me! ha!

Speaking of making the cut... What do you think about these paint colors for my Craigslist Cabinet (see beginning of this post)?

My favorites are Dill & Pup Tent. Which one is your favorite?

I like the feather duster color! Can’t wait to see the final product!

I think I would go with the Dill; and isn’t that a cute name for a paint color? Looking forward to seeing the finished cabinet.
    Best,

Cake balls can be so frustrating to make! BUT, they taste oh so good!
I’m loving the twine you used to tie them all.

I love all your color choices but based on the colors in your rug and since you are trying to make this an accent piece to differentiate it from your your other furniture, which is primarily black, I think pup tent is the best choice. Still think you should consider a deep red….just saying. Whatever you decide will be great.

    1. LOVE the tea pot…sorry the sticker won’t come off :(

    2. I tried making cake balls and it was major fail. I don’t want to talk about it.

    3. I am on a major grey kick and saw some grey cabinets recently so I vote for that!

    XOXOXO

The cake pops that “survived” look great!!!

Cake pops are definitely much too intricate for me… I just don’t have the patience. However, they are worth making for a special event. In fact, I met Bakerella last week! :) She signed my cookbook & everything! I will stick to trusty cake balls for the majority of the time though!!! Everyone loves them and they’re pretty simple… A few tips that I have learned along the way are to make sure and not put too much frosting in the mix as they will be too “soft” and not hold the ball form. Also, make sure that you let them chill for long enough before you coat them. I’m super impatient so I usually end up sticking the cookie sheet in my freezer for ten minutes or so and it does the trick!!! While I love all of the colors of the Wilton melts, the best melting consistency is with the bricks I find at Wal Mart that say they’re for making “Almond Bark.” I don’t even know what Almond Bark is… ha! But these stay melted for much longer than the Wilton melts and that relieves much of my frustrations while making cake balls!

Ok, well that was probably WAY more advice than you asked for! Or… didn’t ask for! :) By the way, I made the pumpkin chocolate chip muffins you blogged about and they were delish! I added more pumpkin & chocolate chips to the mix though! :)

I think that’s the most manual labor I’ve seen J do in quiet a while. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.

I can’t get my Le Creuset stickers off either! I’ve used my dutch oven enough that it has started to peel and crackle and I scrap a little bit off after each washing!

I have had a world of frustration with the cake pops, but have also heard there were tutorials out there now that make it so much easier. I will try again soon. I love Feather Duster with Pup Tent as a close second. Good luck with the refinishing!

I’m personally loving the Dill. Would be cute if you left the doors open (or removed them if it makes sense) and line the inside of the cabinet with a pretty wallpaper with some color. Love it when I see a piece of furniture with that little surprise! Can’t wait to see the finished product. I’m currently addicted to collecting old things and making them new again! It’s so much fun taking something you paid very little for and making it look priceless!
